“The disbelieving leaders among his people said, "If you follow Shu`aib, you
certainly will be losers."” [Qur’an 7:90]
Waqala almalao allatheena kafaroo min qawmihi la-ini ittabaAAtum shuAAayban
innakum ithan lakhasiroona
This ayah/verse conveys the most accurate meaning. When the letter ‘lam’ is
placed before certain words it can give many meanings, one of which is
emphasis and intensification. This use of this letter is known as the 'emphatic
lam'.
The letter 'lam' has been placed in the most perfect place to enhance the
meaning and to increase the communicative effect. In normal speech the 'lam'
would normally be missed out. As stated before the word ‘lam’ is placed before
words to create an emphasis. In the above ayah (verse), the meaning has been
intensified highlighting that the rejection of Prophet Shu’ayb was of great
consequence for the leaders of the disbelievers. Therefore instead of just saying
‘you will be losers’ Allah says in effect ‘you will certainly be losers’.
The extra ‘Lam' imparts intensification.
